While we’re in this very stressful time and even though you can’t leave the house, there are ways to start or continue therapy and have someone to talk to right where you are. Some are even free.
We’re all dealing with the challenges of fatigue and fear, uncertainty and physical isolation, sometimes faring well, other times struggling to keep our psyche and spirit healthy. It can be really helpful to talk to another person, to process your feelings and get some tools to cope with them.
You’ll find many psychotherapists are offering virtual psychotherapy. And if you have insurance, check your policy, because most insurance plans are covering therapy right now.
Also, Gov. Pritzker announced the start of a free emotional support text line, Call 4Calm. Residents can text “TALK” to 552020 to speak with a mental health counselor. Spanish-speaking residents can text “HABLAR” to 552020 for Spanish speakers. People who use the service will remain completely anonymous. There’s also a website, where therapists offer therapy out of pocket between $30 and $60.
As a psychotherapist I’ve been reflecting on the experience of providing therapy remotely since the start of social distancing; I’m glad it’s working so well. One woman said that it’s allowed her to continue to be dedicated to her healing and growth during the crisis, and have a respite of weekly contact and support no matter what other upheaval and disruptions happen.
Going outside, seeing Spring, it could feel especially like the time to open to things in your life that facilitate growth, development, and healing.
