July’s Full Buck Moon

Posted on July 11, 2022

The full Buck Moon is July 13, 2022 at 1:38 PM in Chicago. It’s a Super Moon.

The velvety antlers of male deer which first begin to sprout in early spring finish growing as summer peaks. They form pointed tips and harden into their final glory. The sight of their magnificent racks against the summer sky led to the name, “Full Buck Moon.”

For farmers, high summer is the time to cut and cure hay to put away for winter feed. For this reason, July’s full Moon is also known as the Full Hay Moon.

Thunderstorms are most frequent in July, so the full Moon in this month is sometimes called the Full Thunder Moon.

Berries ripen to maturity in July, so the full moon in July can be called the Strawberry Moon, the Blueberry Moon, or, simply, the Full Berry Moon.

In some northern areas of the United States salmon are at peak spawning season, so some tribes call it the Salmon Full Moon.

But there is another reason to pay attention to this particular July Super Full Moon.

Super moons are so called because they appear when the distance between the earth and moon is very short, due to the earth’s elliptical orbit. Super moons come in threes, falling in consecutive months. This year’s grouping began last month and will end next month.

But this month, the Super Moon will be the biggest and brightest of the three — about 30,000 miles closer than its furthest point. This is all the more exciting when you realize that there will be no more super moons after next month throughout all of 2023 and much of 2024. As a matter of fact, the next Super Moon after this August won’t be until September 18, 2024.

So have yourself a magnificent moon bath!

We all know the moon is magical. It makes us feel so calm. So special. All you have to do is expose yourself to the lunar energy, especially under a waxing or full moon. Just take a stroll in the moonlight or lay your beach blanket out on the sand and lie down and relax.

Moon bathing is an ancient and well-respected practice prescribed for its health benefits. Moonlight triggers the release of melatonin, which promotes relaxation and initiates sleep. Since moonlight is a reflection of sunlight, it provides similar benefits, such as boosting Vitamin D production, yet in a less aggravating manner. In Ayurveda (the traditional healing system of India), moon bathing is believed to be beneficial for hypertension, rashes, hives and various inflammatory conditions. Moon bathing is used to regulate menstrual cycles, increase fertility, lower blood pressure and reduce the symptoms of stress and anxiety.

So go ahead out there and have yourself a magnificent moon bath on the beach! This July’s Full Buck Moon will rise over Lake Michigan after sunset. And, for any of you stargazers who stay up late, there is another treat. Saturn will be rising in the eastern sky around 10PM.

Enjoy the night sky!

The immense enthusiasm I have for understanding and practicing this beautiful hand-healing art of Shiatsu has stayed with me since I began studying in 1975. My Japanese teachers could not speak English well, so they were diligent in imparting the feeling of the work. It is the feeling of deeply understanding and caring for your client; of wishing the best for them; and doing your best for them. Next comes the skillful precision of your technique. And, finally, the knowledge and understanding of the theoretical base is necessary.

I took this to heart and, after extensive study and apprenticeships, became a world-known expert and teacher of Shiatsu. I am still SO in love with this work! I believe people find it easier to be happy when they can move freely without pain. My purpose is to help reduce or eradicate their pain – and the personal suffering that makes it worse.
