Wendy Segal is an artist based in Chicago. Living in Chicago, her original inspiration was the extensive work of the impressionists at the Art Institute. She was taught to draw by her father, perspective and dimension, at an early age. By day she works as a business consultant and has had the opportunity to travel the world. She works in oil, pen and ink, watercolor, and multi-media. She is mostly self-taught, but took a year as a student-at-large at the School of the Art Institute and has taken classes at the Evanston Art and Lill Street Art Centers. She has been exhibited in shows around Chicago in galleries including Women-Made, Elmhurst Artist Guild Art Premier, Lubeznik Center for the Arts, Chicago Art Open, Next Picture Show, and Simply Art Chicago and has received several awards at these shows.
Over time I feel more and more how precious life is and how much beauty there is even in the most mundane things. Seeing makes every day worth living. My work focuses on capturing the beauty in the moment, the place, sun through the trees, a flock of birds, the lives of insects, people with their hope and dreams embodied on their faces, and the infinite varieties of light, shadow, and texture.
The oil paintings have been created over time and are based on my travels and nature. At a point when I ran out of ideas I went back to my pencil and imagination, using a doodling technique which starts with a pencil moving around the paper to make a shape which can be filled in with pattern, pictures or collage. Many of the pencil and pen & ink pieces here are based on this technique. I’ve also relied on Zentangles to get me out of a rut, represented here by 4 pieces.
“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance”…Aristotle
